In light of our project funded by Gilead Sciences, which aims to reduce HIV/AIDS stigma in communities, the Mike Yanou Foundation had another engaging session with the Mile 16 community. Filled with impressive participation, conversations, and brilliant questions, demonstrating a clear understanding of the subject matter by the adolescent boys and girls of the community.
The community’s eagerness to learn and engage was evident in their thought-provoking questions.
“I met a case at the hospital where one parent is positive and the other is not. How possible is it that both couples cohabit without the other getting infected?” an inquisitive mother asked.
Another participant questioned, “What if a person approaches me who is affected, and if we go for a check-up and I find out that the person is positive, do I still go on with the relationship?”
These questions and more were addressed, providing clarity and insight into living with HIV/AIDS. The session concluded on a positive note, with light refreshments and a renewed sense of community.
Our goal is to champion mental health, combat stigma, and foster an inclusive environment where individuals, families, and communities thrive. Through impactful activities like this community session, we aim to empower individuals with knowledge, reduce stigma, and promote a healthier, more supportive community for all.
