“Every day, for no reason, be kind to someone,” urged the program’s presenter. This message resonated deeply during the Mike Yanou Foundation’s engaging and informative session following the World Health Day, themed “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.”
The discussion, held at CRTV’s Mount Cameroon FM, focused on Autism, a critical health issue affecting millions worldwide.
Our health expert delivered an enlightening presentation on Autism, a neurological and developmental disorder that impacts how individuals perceive and interact with their surroundings. The expert broke down the complexities of Autism, its prevalence, and the challenges surrounding this condition.
“People with Autism often face stigma due to difficulties with verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as struggles to understand social norms and rules,” the expert explained.
One of our team members highlighted the intricate relationship between Autism and Mental Health. As an organization dedicated to improving mental health, our speaker emphasized the crucial role families and communities play in promoting the mental well-being of individuals with Autism and their caregivers.
“Autistic individuals often experience depression, frustration, anxiety, and emotional distress, particularly when judged or misunderstood. In extreme cases, this can lead to suicidal thoughts, stemming from feelings of being misunderstood, a burden, or out of place,” the speaker noted.
While Autism is a complex condition, there is hope. By investing in healthy beginnings and providing the right support and resources, we can improve mental health outcomes and create a more hopeful future for individuals with Autism. By working together, we can foster a more inclusive and supportive environment that allows individuals with Autism to thrive.
